Background Information – Job-specific
Background Information IPMG:
UNOPS’ strategic focus emphasizes national capacity development and sustainable approaches to project management, procurement, and infrastructure services. The goal is to be recognized as an organization that delivers world-class infrastructure and project management that is economically and socially sustainable, even in the most challenging environments. To achieve this, UNOPS established the Infrastructure and Project Management Group (IPMG).
Within UNOPS, IPMG aims to enhance the organization’s and its partners’ infrastructure and project management capabilities and disseminate best practices in these areas. This work helps facilitate the successful delivery of programs and projects worldwide.
Within IPMG, the Operations Services Unit (OSU) team aims to: (1) support the organizational readiness of UNOPS, including the Corporate Retainer Pool; and (2) manage IPMG operations.
Organizational Readiness:
Organizational readiness covers the ad-hoc resource needs of the Regional Portfolios to implement the corporate strategy and the organization’s preparedness to address donor needs.
The OSU team supports UNOPS’ global portfolio units and teams by supplementing their existing resources on demand. This includes administering the corporate retainer pool, developing or co-managing other agreements and partnerships, and developing related guidelines. The team also coordinates the corporate offer for project management learning and onboarding.
Support for IPMG Operations:
The OSU provides timely operational support to IPMG and the Procurement Group (PG). It coordinates in the areas of human resources (HR), general administration, communication, finance, and procurement, working closely with other Headquarters (HQ) and transactional units. The OSU also manages the Project of the Year Award (POTYA).
Background Information – Job Specific:
Under the overall management of the OSU Manager and direct supervision of the Communications Senior Officer, the Communication Intern will primarily support communication activities and provide ad-hoc support to the team’s operations. The intern will promote a client-oriented approach to deliver high-quality support services.
The successful candidate will support various tasks and work packages during the internship. We seek qualified applicants with strong communication skills and proficiency in desktop publishing software and website management. The candidate must be client/service-oriented, structured, organized, and detail-oriented. They should also be willing and able to learn online tools managed by UNOPS, provide guidance and assistance to IPMG and PG personnel, and continually improve their technical skills under the Communications Senior Officer’s guidance.
A flagship project during this internship is the Project of the Year Award (POTYA), which celebrates project management excellence and impactful projects. The OSU team collaborates with country offices and field project teams during the award process, providing the intern with insights into UNOPS’ global activities. Another important aspect involves several knowledge products related to UNOPS’ mandate in project management, infrastructure, and procurement, and its priorities in sustainability+ (including GESI and climate).
The intern will also support tasks such as graphic design, proofreading, and layout of publications. As a Google-based organization, there is an opportunity to develop and refine how publications and knowledge products are shared digitally and leverage communication data to analyze the performance of communication activities. Depending on the candidate’s interests, they may be exposed to other support services beyond communications.
By the end of the internship, the successful candidate will have gained exposure to UNOPS’ project management, infrastructure, and procurement activities; the Support Services area; corporate-level communications; an international work environment; and headquarters. The internship is expected to start in June 2025 for an initial duration of 6 months, extendable to 12 months based on funding and performance.
